The following age classes, designated by USSA in the Alpine Competition Guide, are recognized nationwide as standard age groups for ski racing (for the 2007/2008 race year):
J-5: Ages 10 and under (born
in 1999, 1998 and 1997)
J-4: Ages 11 and 12 (born
in 1996 and 1995)
J-3: Ages 13 and 14 (born
in 1994 and 1993)
These athletes are expected to have the ability to ski at a much higher level
than a recreational skier. The training day, which will begin at approximately
8:30 AM and run until approximately 2:30 PM, will allow for approximately five
hours of training (breaks will be taken for lunch and to allow for warm ups on
very cold days). Early in the training season, a portion of the training day
will involve stretching, calisthenics, and other non-skiing strength and
flexibility drills. The focus of training for these age groups will concentrate
on the techniques needed to make sharp, quick turns using the edges of the skis
and transfer of the racer’s weight. These techniques will help the racer to
generate more power through and out of each turn while maintaining speed down a
race course. Various ski drills and gate training will be used to develop the
proper techniques to achieve a superior level of balance and control at racing
speeds.
